| This thesis will conduct a profound study of the most common symbols that occur in the so-called Minoan and Mycenaean art, on Crete, mainland Greece and in their broader sphere of influence during the Bronze Age. Form methodological point of view, it will further develop the approach applied in the preceding bachelor thesis by the student, regarding one of the Minoan symbols, the sacral knot. Among other major signs studied in this work will be the double axe, the figure of eight-shaped shield and the horns of consecration.
The study will focus especially on the: 1. chronological evolution of the signs themselves 2. quantity and variability of used materials 3. depictions supplemented by these symbols The aim of this study will be to define a set of rules or schemes applied for the iconographic use of these symbols during the individual time periods and, finally, to outline interrelations, similarities but also differences among each of these signs. |
