Zadání práce v anglickém jazyce:
The thesis will provide an analysis of spatial setting in selected short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, and will be based mainly on Daniela Hodrová’s works “Places with a Secret” and “The Poetics of a Place”. In the thesis, short stories “The Cask of Amontillado”, “The Black Cat”, “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “Eleonora”, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “The Masque of the Red Death”, “The Oval Portrait”, “The Pit and the Pendulum” and “Ligeia” will be observed with an attempt to explore how does the spatial setting in them correspond to the concept of “a place with a secret” which Hodrová examines and defines in her work. Simultaneously, the concept of “a character with a secret” will be studied, since it deeply intertwines with the idea of “a place with a secret”, and the two cannot be possibly separated. Accordingly, the thesis will attempt to uncover how does the setting and the characters affect and reflect each other.
As for the structure of the thesis, it will begin with three theoretical introductory chapters which will serve as a base for the later analysis. The chapters will place Edgar Allan Poe and Daniela Hordrová into historical and literary context, and then the terminology of Daniela Hodrová will be explained, specifically the terms “a place with a secret” and “a character with a secret”. Thenceforth, the first chapters of the analysis will focus on “characters with a secret”, especially on characters experiencing madness, twins and doubles, and “the monsters” (the undead, masked characters etc.). Afterwards, the spatial setting itself will be examined in relation to the characters, firstly as a reflection of the characters and their minds, and then contrastingly as an influencer which alternates the characters’ behavior or emotions. Furthermore, the setting in Poe’s stories will be observed as a living character and as a bearer of memories. Following section of the thesis will examine the structures of places in the stories, focusing especially on their resemblance to a labyrinth or a prison. Lastly, the final section of the thesis will shortly discuss the significance of temporal setting.

Zadání práce v českém jazyce:
Práce bude analyzovat prostorové umístění děje ve vybraných povídkách Edgara Allana Poea. Analýza bude čerpat zejména z děl Daniely Hodrové „Místa s tajemstvím“ a „Poetika míst“. Studovány budou Poeovy povídky „Sud vína amontilladského“, „Černý kocour“, „Zrádné srdce“, „Eleonora“, „Pád domu Usherů“, „Maska červené smrti“, „Oválný portrét“, „Jáma a kyvadlo“ a „Ligeia“. Bakalářská práce bude zjišťovat, jak prostorové umístění děje v těchto povídkách souhlasí s konceptem „místa s tajemstvím“, který Daniela Hodrová ve svém díle zkoumá a definuje. Současně se práce zaměří i na koncept „postavy s tajemstvím“, jelikož dle Hodrové jsou postavy a místa v literárních dílech neoddělitelně propojeny. Hlavním tématem práce tedy bude nejen prokázat, že prostory v Poeových povídkách spadají do kategorie „místa s tajemstvím“, ale především prozkoumat, jak se postavy a místa v jednotlivých povídkách vzájemně ovlivňují.
Práce bude započata třemi teoretickými kapitolami, které poslouží jako základ pro následnou analýzu. Nejprve budou Edgar Allan Poe a Daniela Hodrová zařazeni do historického a literárního kontextu, a následně bude vysvětlena terminologie, kterou Hodrová ve své práci používá, především termíny „místo s tajemstvím“ a „postava s tajemstvím“. Následná analýza se bude nejprve soustředit na koncept „postav s tajemstvím“, zvláště na postavy prožívající šílenství, na dvojčata a dvojníky, a nakonec na postavy monstrózní (nemrtví, maskované postavy atd.). Posléze bude práce zkoumat prostorové umístění děje ve vztahu k postavám, konkrétně místo jako „zrcadlo“ postav a jejich duševních stavů, a poté naopak místo jako ovlivňující faktor, který působí na chování a emoce postav. Prostorové umístění děje bude následně zkoumáno také jako samostatná literární postava a vlastník vzpomínek. Následující část bakalářské práce se zaměří na tvar a rozložení míst v Poeových povídkách, předně na jejich podobnost s labyrintem či vězením. Nakonec bude práce krátce zkoumat také význam časového umístění děje, tedy propojení času, místa a postav.
