Zásady pro vypracování

This thesis investigates the degree to which James Joyce’s Ulysses and Finnegans Wake had an influence on the writings of Bohumil Hrabal, particularly Dancing Lessons for the Advanced in Age, I Served the King of England, and Too Loud a Solitude. I utilize Poggioli’s The Theory of the Avant Garde as a platform from which to analyze Joyce and Hrabal’s respective styles, contextualizing their respective developments as authors and their ultimate push against particular theories. In other words, there is a focus on the extent to which Joyce and Hrabal set themselves apart, to a degree in an avant garde way. The analysis of style centers on the use of stream of consciousness, the relationship between narrator and reader, and play with language and montage. Yet while much of the analysis in the first chapters focuses on style, the last chapter and the conclusion draw the authors closer together in their thematic focus. Here there is a greater discussion of the everyday (a la Lefebvre) and the epiphanies that arise therein. These moments of revelation prove to be the ultimate guiding principle for both Joyce and Hrabal, and the thesis concludes with this note of epiphany and the authors’ respective definitions.
