The main objective of this BA thesis is to provide an extensive, detailed study of the main male characters of the Brontë sisters’ novels: Edward Rochester from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, Heathcliff from Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, and Arthur Huntingdon from Anne Brontë’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. These particular characters were chosen on the basis of their origin – each of them occupies the masterpiece of each of the three sisters – as well as their resemblance in temperament and their roles in the respective novels.
All three characters are given the prominent part of the heroine’s love interest and as a result, they are one of the main factors which drive the plot forward, but their complex personalities impede the easy categorisation into protagonists. They are dark, charismatic individuals who partially reflect the Romantic legacies of the Byronic hero and Titanism, but they also challenge the traditional concepts of Victorian protagonists. In fact, their deeply flawed morals often cause them to act antagonistically towards other characters (including their female counterparts), they defy the conventions of class hierarchy, their motives and backgrounds are questionable, and their character arcs are completed outside of the traditional norms of both Victorian and Romantic literature.
While heroines of the Brontë sisters are not the central focus of this thesis, their relationships with the male characters and the mutual influence the couples have on each other play a major part in this analysis. This mutual influence must be recognised as the key to answering the most important question which this thesis will attempt to address: how did the authors choose to resolve the conflict that each of the male characters brings to their novels? Each writer combines a different mixture of acceptance, adaptation, and destruction; in the end, the heroes either achieve redemption or succumb to their vices, but the order is always restored. One of the main arguments this thesis will offer is that the final equilibrium is achieved through catharsis on the principles of moral values – both general and Protestant. This thesis will therefore investigate the characters and actions of each of the heroes, as well as the outside influences which bring them in harmony with their settings.
Apart from providing a comprehensive analysis of the characters, this BA thesis will also examine possible inspirations and motivations behind their stories and identities, including the authors’ life experiences and the influence of literary currents. It will also discuss both immediate and contemporary reception, as well as historical readings of the characters and the development of their criticism through the time.
