| This paper deals with the topic of women in British India and the change of their situation during the British rule. With the British taking over the rule of the country, mainly in the second half of the 19th century, Indian society faced an encounter with the western customs and different takes on women’s rights. The British introduced laws which improved the situation of women such as Women’s Rights to Property Act and many others. However, the colonial rulers respected the caste system and also their approach to conjugal rights and female suffrage wasn’t in favor of women. A significant mention is also given to the issue of prostitution and The Indian Contagious Diseases Act of 1868 which although being progressive was not clearly female friendly. Laws passed and the situation of women in this period of time will be viewed in both gender and historical perspective. |
