James Kelman has been known as one of the most important writers hailing from today’s Scotland. He is active politically and culturally, and characterized himself as socialist libertarian anarchist - a characterization that is to be in the centre of the thesis, mainly for the reason to see how he reconciles this claim with his art or how it manifests in it. Interviews will serve as an introduction into the political views of the author, and the politics will be the main focus of this thesis. They will allow seeing the way in which the author views his novels and creative process and also, in the introduction, give background insight into the place where he grew up, the industrial Glasgow. Authorial intention, however, cannot are not an explanation and will only serve as an introductory hinge. Often regarded as brutish and vulgar, his novels have been accused of being unworthy of the many prizes they were awarded: how this plays with the way anarchism and anarchy as its non-political counterpart are perceived and what is actually the truth - do the novels provide us with a look of a primitive, bad people or do they rather portray the characters without judgement, life as it is. In the centre of Kelman’s universe is the working class. How the writer deals with “representation”. How does James Kelman convey the common man without stereotyping / cliché? The way in which anarchism allows to fit the ideology for an individual. Anti-authoritarian aspects of some novels shall be inspected. The anti-authoritarian and anti-nationalist beliefs connected to anarchism on general level need to be explored as well; the roots in Scottish nation are prominent, and the could sway the view of the novels as nationalst. What does the setting of the novels do when linked to this? How does nationality manifest in the novels in connection to anti-nationalist ideology that is anarchism. Lastly, the question can be asked: is anarchism the first post-modernism? How is James Kelman anarchistic in formal sense? In what ways does he deviate from the linear thought and how does he break traditional story telling? Overall, this thesis should aim to analyze the manner in which politics showcase in literary output of James Kelman and synergize with some revolutionary philosophical concepts. |
