The god Thoth was one of the major players in the Ancient Egyptian pantheon. Being worshiped as a lunar deity, god of scribes and learning, arbitrator in divine quarrels, vizier of the creator god and even as a creator god himself, Thoth is a multifaceted character with a complex role in Egyptian mythology. In many instances he acts as a mediating agent, helping to restore the unity of a universe divided by mythical struggle, in others he provides aid to his fellow deities, providing advice or otherwise intervening on their behalf.
While his role in later texts is mostly limited to one of secondary character, helping the various mythical protagonists in their endeavors, in older sources his activities are remarkably more varied and surprisingly ambivalent. The purpose of this thesis is to examine Thoth's significance in the oldest attested corpus of Egyptian religious documents, the Pyramid Texts, with particular regard to his role in the drama of Osiris' death and the subsequent divine succession crisis. To this end later funerary and mythical materials will also be cited, when necessary, to provide context to the somewhat fragmentary image of Thoth provided by the ritually oriented Pyramid Texts. |
