The figure of the vampire is one of the strongest images of present-day culture, appearing in films, books and many different types of merchandise; however, the process in which this phenomenon has developed into its present state is a complex one and the history of this figure significantly reflects the transformation of modern culture as such. The thesis will attempt to explore traditional vampire myths in a broad (mostly European) context and confront these with the way in which vampire mythology is exploited by modern literatures. As the vampire texts are considerably numerous especially in 19th-century Britain, the thesis will focus on literary texts of this period, showing how the traditional narratives were transformed into a new productive form of the “urban Gothic” and how these modern stories contributed to the development of the fantastic genre. Attention will be paid especially to the large semantic field which these modern texts opened, be it the questions of disease, hygiene, and sexuality, or national integrity and other emerging Victorian anxieties, and also to the possible causes of these new concerns. The analysed texts will include novels, short fiction and poems from to Romantic period to the Mauve Decade of the British fin-de-siecle. |
