Even though listening is often perceived as one of the most difficult skills to acquire in learning English by second language learners, teachers tend to work through well-worn routines and many problems of weak listeners remain undiagnosed. This might be partly caused by the fact that the methodology of teaching listening in ELT classrooms has been insufficiently discussed, researched or challenged over the years (certainly less than methodology for teaching other language skills). It is thus the aim of the present diploma thesis to focus on current trends in teaching listening as they appear in various teacher training manuals, as well as to look into the classroom reality of today with respect to textbook materials used by the teachers.
The theoretical part of the thesis will present a brief history of the developments in approaches to teaching listening in ELT classrooms from the beginnings in the 1960s, when listening was used only as a means of presenting new grammar, until the present day, when the most widely-spread comprehensive approach is starting be perceived as inadequate and a change is called for. The thesis will explore how this change in approach is reflected in various teacher training manuals by providing a comparison of their older and newer editions.
The main goal of the practical part is to ascertain whether the changes in the approach to teaching listening (the shift from product-oriented to process-oriented approach as professed by Field, 2009) found in the teacher training manuals are reflected in the classroom reality, and if they can be found in textbooks, which are taken to be the primary source of materials selected by teachers for teaching listening in language classrooms. The aim of the practical part is to present a detailed analysis of the most frequently used textbooks today (New English File, New Headway and New Cutting Edge) with respect to their typology of listening exercises, and to compare older and newer editions of the above-mentioned textbooks so as to asses whether any observable changes have in fact been made. The thesis will thus contribute to the ongoing discussion of whether research in applied linguistics manages to find its way into language classrooms.
