Předběžná náplň práce
In recent years, the convergence of journalism and documentary filmmaking has created new opportunities for storytelling, audience engagement, and ethical considerations. Journalism has played a significant role in the development and evolution of social documentaries, and these documentaries are perceived by audiences in various ways.
When it comes to documentaries, which over the years have covered various subjects, I find social documentaries to be a powerful medium for addressing critical societal issues, fostering empathy, and promoting positive change.
Social documentaries are a specific genre of documentary filmmaking that focuses on presenting and exploring various social, cultural, political, or environmental issues. These documentaries are created with the primary purpose of raising awareness, promoting understanding, and inspiring action or change on the issues they address. They often provide an in-depth and often critical examination of a particular topic or subject matter, aiming to inform and engage viewers on important societal matters.
These documentaries play a crucial role in shedding light on important societal issues and encouraging dialogue and action to address them. Documentaries have come from way, when pioneers like Lumière Brothers and Robert Flaherty created films that documented real-life events and cultures, often a straightforward, observational style. Using various means of measures like Film festivals, social media and online media, qualitative audience feedback, I propose in understanding how audiences perceive and engage with these documentaries can provide valuable insights into their potential impact. I could l also aim to investigate the audience reception of social documentaries in two culturally diverse regions: Europe and India.
Documentaries often inform, inspire Social Change, whereupon media or journalism often serves as the initial source of information about critical social issues, such as poverty, inequality, environmental concerns, and human rights abuses.
Most of the documentaries prefer to use investigative pieces to dig deeper into the issues and expose them via their film. It can be said that social documentaries often pick up where journalism leaves off, offering in-depth exploration, analysis, and personal narratives.
I feel that documentaries are there to amplify voices and go beyond journalistic reporting with their in-depth approach by highlighting personal narratives and experiences, allowing audiences to connect with the subjects on a deeper emotional level, thus humanising complex problems, making them more relatable and compelling for audiences.
Social documentaries use the visual medium to convey information and emotions, engaging with audiences and making an impact, by using compelling visuals, interviews to giving the stories a visual meaning than just the written word.
Social documentaries have the freedom to explore overlooked or underreported subjects, thereby filling gaps in mainstream media coverage. Though both journalism and social documentaries aim to raise awareness about pressing social problems, the documentaries, through their storytelling prowess, can evoke empathy, anger, or inspiration in viewers, which may lead to conversations and actions to address the issues.
Talking about perceptions, the audiences come from across social sectors thus the perception vary, while some may appreciate the depth and emotional impact of documentaries, others may be critical of documentaries, questioning their accuracy or their ability to effect meaningful change.
In conclusion, while journalism serves as a crucial foundation for social documentaries by bringing attention to social issues, while documentaries provide a deeper and more personal exploration of these issues.
Audience perceptions of social documentaries can range from seeing them as powerful tools for change to questioning their objectivity and impact. Ultimately, the perception of social documentaries depends on individual perspectives and the quality of the filmmaking and storytelling.
Thus, with this research, I propose to look at comparing the audience perception and engagement with documentaries.

Comparative Analysis: Compare and contrast the survey results, interview findings, and content analysis between Europe and India to identify commonalities and differences.
Conclusion:
This research will contribute to the field of documentary studies by shedding light on the nuances of audience engagement with social documentaries in diverse cultural and social contexts. Comparative studies between different regions or cultures can reveal how social documentaries are received and interpreted differently, thus the findings can inform filmmakers, producers, and distributors on how impactful are the documentaries that resonate with specific audiences, leading to greater social impact.
