The prolonged tail streamers of barn swallows represent a textbook example of a sexually selected trait. However, little is known about the temporal stability in the expression of this strait, and how this expression affects lifetime reproductive success (LRS) of individuals. The applicant will analyze data on the reproductive output of more than 150 individual barn swallows followed over their lifespan with the aim to evaluate the idea of a presumably clear positive association between the length of tail streamers and lifetime reproductive output (fitness) in male and female barn swallows.
