Natural photosynthesis occurs under the conditions of weak driving by an external light, which changes illumination of a photosynthetic apparatus on a very slow time scale (in comparison with the ultrafast energy transfer rates). Ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy, which is our main source of information about the photosynthetic energy transfer, and the quantum mechanical analysis of their results seem to suggest that the dynamics of an antenna can be understood as a series of ultrafast events. However, the conditions in nature require a continuous change of state model. The appropriate mode of the description of the photosynthetic antenna complexes is therefore a non-equilibrium steady state with feeding and draining of the excitation. The dissertation project aims at combining the steady state models of excitation with the theoretical techniques, which successfully describe short time dynamics of individual photosynthetic antennae in ultrafast pulsed experiments. Theoretical tools of the open quantum systems theory and decoherence theory will be applied here on particular well-defined biological systems studied experimentally in recent years. Achieving a reliable steady state formulation of problems otherwise studied by dynamical methods will enable to treat more complicated and larger photosynthetic systems, and it will at the same time bring theory closer to the description of the real situation in photosynthetic organisms |
