Uvažujme problém hledání kořenů polynomů, přičemž polynom je vyjádřen v bázi ortogonálních polynomů (například Čebyševových či Legendreových). Z koeficientů polynomu v dané bázi lze sestavit přidruženou matici a problém výpočtu kořenů polynomu převést na problém výpočtu vlastních čísel matice.

Consider the problem of computing the zeros of a polynomial. The polynomial can be given in various bases (monomial, Chebyshev, Legendre, etc.) Using the coefficients of the polynomial in the given basis one can form an associate matrix. Depending on the chosen basis, this matrix is called a companion, a colleague, or, in general, a comrade matrix. The comrade matrix has a special property: The given polynomial is the characteristic and also the minimal polynomial of this matrix. Therefore, the problem of computing roots of a polynomial can be transformed to the problem of computing the eigenvalues of the comrade matrix. The accuracy of computations of the roots of the polynomial depends also on properties of the comrade matrix. The goal of this bachelor thesis is to describe in detail the relation between roots of a polynomial and the eigenvalues of the corresponding comrade matrix, to study properties of comrade matrices, and to perform corresponding numerical experiments using Matlab.
