Research question and motivation:
Brexit is one of the most frequent phenomena nowadays. E.g. searching Brexit in the search engine Google brings about 117 mil results and every day more and more results appear.

It is a “living organism” that was given breath by British citizens in the 23. June 2016 referendum. There is no precedent, no similar experience to build upon and hence the future of the UK outside the EU structure constitutes a big unknown.

The act of a member state, the UK, leaving the EU significantly affects the process of the European integration. Without doubts, even after the UK getting independence, the UK cannot ignore the world’s biggest united market with almost half a billion potential customers.

In my paper I will try to follow the question of what Brexit means and how could possible scenarios of further development in the relationship between the UK and the EU look like.

Contribution:
Regarding the perspective of mutual trade relations between the Czech Republic and the UK, it must be noted that the EU membership significantly simplified the trade. It is apparent, that even in the case of positive development of further relationship setting, the mutual trade will most probably suffer from complications rather than easements. E.g. higher bureaucracy and setbacks in possible customs procedures at borders.

After a brief summary of the UK membership in the EU, I will focus on the theme “Brexit” – in the context of the thesis outline (points 1.-6.).
The UK is an important business partner of the Czech Republic, therefore I will discuss in the paper the mutual trade relations and possible impacts of Brexit on this trade.

I will try to comment different Brexit “hardness” (different possible forms of Brexit) and to focus on possible forms of business cooperation with the UK after its independence – Norwegian type of membership in the EFTA, Swiss approach to bilateral agreements, or so-called “hard” Brexit in terms of WTO rules. If a preferential trade agreement could not be negotiated over a roughly two-year negotiation period and the negotiation period would not be extended, then the business relationships would be governed by non-preferential - thus the least advantageous rules of the WTO. That would significantly in a negative way affect the mutual trade due to the introduction of customs duties. In such case, the trade with the UK would run in the same way as with other EU partners without preferential agreement.

Methodology:
The paper will be primarily designed in a form of selected literature search (see List of academic literature, materials by British business mainly), with a focus on trade aspects. The literature search will be supplemented with my own views based on the study of the literature, that was approved by my thesis supervisor.

For the analysis of the bilateral trade between the Czech Republic and the UK, I will use statistical data on foreign trade published by the Czech Statistical Office.

Outline:
1. Membership of the UK in the EU
2. Brexit
3. Chosen analyses regarding economic aspects of Brexit
4. Possible scenarios of further development in relationship between the UK and the EU
5. Business relationship between the Czech Republic and the UK
6. Potential impact of Brexit on mutual trade between the Czech Republic and the UK
