This paper answers the question of why and how two small, radical protest parties – the League of Polish Families and Self Defense became part of a governing coalition in Poland in 2005. Divisions within society transgress into and are reflected in divisions on the political scene. The main theoretical source for this is the examination and adaptation of the Lipset – Rokkan theory of Social Cleavages. Although the theory is flawed by the fact that it is limited to describing events in Western Europe which are becoming less relevant with time its basic assumptions are still helpful when making a link between social behaviour and political party preference. Due to the specific nature of Poland as a post Communist eastern European country we have adapted the model looking at issues such as de communisation as a source of social cleavage. Both Self Defence and the League of Polish families can be widely categorised as protest parties. Protest parties, they took advantage of existing divisions in society to become part of the coalition in 2005. However , their demise was brought about by their protest nature. The lack of coherent policy other than capitalising on protest proved to be inefficient in government and their supporters were poached by larger parties |
