This thesis deals with the issues surrounding the phenomenon of school shootings in the United States of America, where this is an ever-present issue; this thesis more specifically focuses on the ideology and motivations behind them and how masculinity plays a role in this form of violence, it seeks to present some of the theories that have been put forward for understanding this role and connection, but also does a bilateral analysis of manifestos of five selected school shooters. The analysis uses a quantitative method known as LIWC, through which it looks to at the texts in a comparative manner, comparing certain uses of rhetoric and words to a common sample text; the categories analysed there are of such nature as weaponry, violence, authenticity or “incel rhetoric”. The second methodology used for the qualitative part of the thesis is the phenomenological method, which seeks to highlight emerging tropes within the individual texts and highlight certain features that prove the theories of masculinity. This field is rather important since the school shooting phenomenon has been incredibly strongly presented in both media as well as policy making within the United States of America over the past 30 years. However, it does not seem as though any concrete policy measures enacted have been able to consistently and strongly stop the spread of this horrific way of enacting violence; hence this thesis focuses on one instrumental part and its connections within the larger debate, which could be understood to be relatively stagnant. Therefore, this thesis and, more generally, academic works focusing on specific parts and connections behind these attacks are integral for not only understanding the processes at play properly but also addressing them on a policy level.
