Research question and motivation
The research questions are the following: What are the effects of large food manufacturers’ activities on the economy of the country, in terms of it's economic and health factors? Is the emergence of a large international food manufacturer beneficial for the economy of a developing country?
The market of food products covers the whole population of a country. Its development becomes particularly important in the conditions of the existing global agricultural problems, which is highlighted by Lomborg (2013, p.368). Therefore, it is essential to analyze how the activities of large food manufacturers can impact the economies of states.
By International Labour Organization (2007) four broad types of companies are identified as strongly involved in food production, processing and distribution. These are:
(i) large food retailers or supermarkets (for example, Wal-Mart, Carrefour, Tesco, Metro);
(ii) large food-processing companies (such as Nestlé, Unilever, Danone, Sysco);
(iii) large fast-food chains (such as McDonald’s, KFC, Starbucks, Subway);
(iv) other non-food firms (such as Benetton) and private equity firms (such as Texas Pacific, Apax) operating fast-food and/or food-processing operations.
In this thesis (ii) and (iii) companies only would be taken into consideration for analyzing the impacts.
Agricultural sphere is vital for the economy of a country, as it is providing food and raw-material to non-agricultural spheres of the economy, it also provides employment opportunities for unskilled labour. At the same time, Micek (2013, p.103) suggests that the food markets of developing countries are more vulnerable to large multinational corporations, i.e. the effects are more dramatic. The emergence of a large food manufacturer can save/boost the economy of the developing countries, creating new enterprises in the country, for instance their own food-processing plants as The McComplex in Moscow. On the other hand it creates costs such as hard competition for local manufacturers. That is why it is important to analyze, whether the benefits prevail the costs.

Contribution
The contribution is expected to be a detailed overview of the effects which large food manufacturers can bring to developed and developing states on particular case studies, as well as own research and assumptions regarding the benefits of the multinational food manufacturer emergence in the developing country, where the exact manufacturer still does not exist. (ex. McDonalds in Armenia) There are researches describing the impacts of the agricultural sector on the economy, as “Agriculture is the backbone of economy” by Qadri (2018), however the prevalence of costs and benefits of the impacts for the developing countries has not been researched yet, and that is why my thesis will add new information to the existing literature.

Methodology
The thesis will be based mostly on secondary research. The case study method will be applied to investigate the examples of particular countries and the impact of food manufacturers on them.
By impact I will consider the growth/decrease in the values of specific regional and national variables associated with income, employment, health, education and infrastructure as those variables are directly connected with the economic indicators.
For instance the growth/decrease of GDP, GDP per capita, Human Development Index (HDI) and its components, trends in dietary energy supply (DES) will be analyzed. The correlation of those variables with the existence of a large food manufacturer in the country will be determined. Deductive thinking will be used for providing the author’s own arguments.
