The motions of relatively small particles in selected flows of superfluid helium 4 (He II) are experimentally visualized in order (i) to reveal the quantum features of He II flows and (ii) to investigate relevant (possible) similarities with classical (viscous) flows. The work specifically discusses the relation between the derived flow properties, such as the particle velocity distribution, and the length scale probed by the particles. Quantum features may indeed appear at small enough length scales, smaller than the quantum scale of the flow, the average distance between quantized vortices, while, at larger flow length scales, a viscous-like picture may emerge. The work therefore aims at giving a significant contribution to the study of quantum flows, an active and challenging line of scientific enquiry, with far-reaching implications. |
