Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most common form of epilepsy in humans. In temporal lobe epilepsy, hippocampus and other limbic regions are the most affected structures. The exact role of individual limbic areas in temporal lobe epilepsy is still not well determined. Chronic animal models of temporal lobe epilepsy are frequently used to investigate basic mechanisms of seizures and epileptogenesis. In the proposed project we will examine involvement of the hippocampus in pathogenesis of temporal lobe epilepsy induced by tetanus toxin. Structural alterations of the hippocampus will be thoroughly examined using histochemical techniques and the extent of neuronal damage will be quantified.
