In this thesis we will construct a financial stress index analyzing stressful episodes and drawing lessons from previous experience. Moreover it will assess the impact of the downturn periods on the economy as a whole. The key interest of this thesis is to analyze the periods of financial distress in order to anticipate and avoid the same issues in the future. In attempting to achieve this goal data over the past decade will be analyzed using specially tailored financial stress index (FSI) created for the case of Czech Republic. The substantial advantage of this approach is that we will be able to capture more accurately (with monthly precision) the periods of beginning of financial turmoil and subsequently it would be possible to use them to reduce impacts of the crisis. Furthermore, FSI will identify also the periods which are not connected to financial distress. Model of vector autoregression will be used as a tool to analyze the impact of these episodes on the economic activity in a country.
