Naši analýzu obohatíme o zahrnutí různých hladin významnosti, dvou distribucí a 6 odlišných tržních indexů s cílem identifikovat ten nejpřesnější a nejefektivnější způsob pro škálování ohrožené hodnoty. |

The Value at Risk has become one of the most popular risk measurement techniques in nance. For example, under Basel II the banks are to use the 10-day Value at Risk for regulatory purposes. And the suggested and widely used practice for time-scaling of the VaR is to use the square root of time rule. It is, however, argued that this is not a particularly accurate scaling rule. The main point of this thesis is backtesting of dierent scaling (the square root of time rule and the application of the Hurst exponent) rules for Value at Risk in the Basel context. We augment our analysis by considering various condence levels, two distributional assumptions and 6 market indices with the goal to identify the
most precise and ecient way for time-scaling. The outline of the thesis is as follows: Firstly, we will review the theory for Value at Risk, Return distributions, caling rules, Hurst exponent, and regulatory backtesting. Next, we will compute 1-day VaR via different methods (variance-covariance method; augumented istorical simulation; Monte Carlo simulation) for various confidence levels and distributional assumptions. We derive the Hurst exponents and time-scale our esults for various holding horizons (by Hurst exponents and square-root of time). In the end, we perform an extensive backetesting (with accordance to the Basel II framework) to determine the most accurate and suitable scaling rule. We provide an overview of results, compare the particular methods, and draw some implications for banks. |
