Zásady pro vypracování

This bachelor thesis will encounter the topic of principal themes and motifs in Miroslav Holub's poetry both in original and in translation to English. Within this thesis, the student will compare and contrast selected poems and explore whether and how the themes and motifs differ, and whether it is a consequence of language. The aim of the thesis is to find similarities and differences in tendencies present in Holub’s poetry both in Czech and in English. The focus will be mainly on analyses of selected poems based on close reading. Furthermore, analyses of various critics would be included with an attempt to distinguish analogies and contrasts in the way Holub’s work is perceived in English and Czech criticism (e.g. what themes and motifs are seen as prominent). Due to the fact that Miroslav Holub’s poetry has been widely translated into English, and he has been recognized as one of the major Eastern European poets after World War II, both primary and secondary sources are available in a sufficient number.
