The shift from industrialism to postindustrialism has had significant impact on functional and spatial structure of the city. These circumstances, among others, permitted the crucial transformation of waterfronts. The waterfront redevelopment is already a global phenomenon which is with the influence of global economy interconnection, gradually spreading to smaller cities. Bratislava, like other postsocialist cities, can be considered as an example where postindustrial and postsocialist transformation run simultaneously. Waterfronts offer a significant functional, physical, social and environmental change. They represent conflict areas with interests from local to global scale. The understanding of processes and influences has a key impact on taking the temporary chance of radical city core transformation. The dissertation thesis will use political economy perspective to investigate regeneration of inner cities with a specific focus on waterfronts. The case study of selected metropolis, preferentially national capital, will reflect the world context of urban regeneration, focus on the processes and mechanisms of regeneration including identification of main actors, their interests and conflicts, and reveal consequences for the overall city development and suggest policies and actions to achieve smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.
