Evaluating cost of iterative matrix computations
(such as computations with Krylov subspace methods) represents an enormously involved problem. An attempt to address this problem must include investigation of convergence and numerical stability, and consider points like nonlinearity, maximal attainable accuracy, and delay of convergence. Moreover, the problem can not be addressed within the field of matrix computations alone; it requires much wider context. The total approximation error must be evaluated in the functional space corresponding to the mathematical modeling level. The algebraic error (typically measured in a global way using the backward error and the algebraic perturbation theory) may create in the functional space significant local components. Its incorporation into the total error with considering the locality and the interplay between the discretization and the algebraic computation seems to be a widely open challenge. |
