Zásady pro vypracování

Contemporary Irish women’s poetry performs female identity in various modes. It may be concerned with particular topics such as motherhood, the female body or social role, or it can explicitly refer to the silenced woman’s voice in the Irish literary history. Along with women’s reflection of reality, the interpretation of history and established patriarchal concepts and truths are illuminated. The poetry may also question the possibility of verbalizing female voice and desire within the given language, and introduce thus new approaches to literary language and expression.
The diploma dissertation will begin with close reading of particular poems, which will be linked afterwards to background theoretical concepts. For the analysis the work of four contemporary Irish poets: Eavan Boland, Medbh McGuckian, Vona Groarke and Mary Ann Higgins will be used. These poets share some aspects of women’s poetry and diverge in others, and will be discussed in relation to the feminist theory, particularly Judith Butler’s concern with gender. The attempt will be not only to trace feminist tendencies in the poems, but to read women’s poetry in its complexity that can defy, complicate, or transcend feminist concepts. The thesis will follow some aspects, themes and problems which arise in literature along with contemporary Irish female poetry, and will include discussion of its interpretation and link to theory.
