Flow visualisation techniques have recently been applied for the investigation of various cryogenic flows of liquid helium. Quantitative particle image velocimetry and particle tracking velocimetry techniques, proven in the past as very fruitful in many scientific and industrial areas of research, will be used as an experimental approach for the analysis of cryogenic flows and the results compared with complementary experiments in water. The technique needs to be optimised in view of a number of technical and fundamental difficulties, e.g., the optical access to the helium bath and choice of suitable tracer particles. Using the new equipment supplied by Dantec Dynamics, our laboratory at the Charles University in Prague will be the first in Europe to utilize cryogenic flow visualisation using liquid helium as a working fluid.
