In the Western Balkans region, each country has undergone specific social, cultural, political and economic developments, influencing the way the property is used, the ownership and the approach to the environment in general. While these changes are evident in the environment, there is a lack of comprehensive studies exploring their impact in landscape protected areas. The aim of the study is to evaluate the management practices of national parks within the Southern Dinaric Mountains region, focusing on understanding landscape transformations, the factors that determine changes in the landscape, the impact of local culture on the conservation practices and management of national parks. This goal will be achieved through the following objectives in particular: 1) Investigate the patterns and drivers of landscape transformations within the national parks of the Dinaric mountain ranges; 2) Examine the wider regional context of protected area management in the south Dinaric mountains, analysing various approaches and strategies employed by different countries to protect natural heritage and promote sustainable development; 3) Assessment of functions and management strategies of national parks in the study area. The methodology of the dissertation thesis will be based on the combination of landscape research approaches and methods, including the review of secondary data sources, relevant literature, legal frameworks and management strategies, and conducting field research and qualitative interviews with local stakeholders.
