Take the data about institutional subscription to Overleaf
https://www.overleaf.com/for/institutions-using-overleaf and compare them with ranking of universities. The goal of this is to figure out if there is some relation between using Latex and quality of university. Since the data on Latex use are difficult to get, we will use data on institutional subscription of Overleaf. We will look at rankings in general and according to fields (economics, computer science, math, ...) We will look at results globally and regionally. My guess is that at least for USA there will be strong correlation between academic ranking and use of Overleaf. Once we check the simple correlation between Overleaf and ranking, we will go for more sophisticated econometric methods. Naturally we can check for other socio economic variables to separate Latex use from other determinants like size of university library, endowment (wealth) of university, size of university, public funding, and whatever factors we may think about as factors influencing the quality of university. I.e. while we are interested in LaTeX factor, we may think about other issues influencing quality/ranking of university and issues of academic success like teamwork etc. Since ranking are usually functions of some variables (like international mobility, publications etc.) we have to think about issues of endogeneity a multicolinearity. We can also look for supportive research on Latex use and quality like in Is LaTeX use correlated with the number of equations in a manuscript? AV Moorhead - Scientometrics, 2021 - Springer |
