This thesis focuses on the engagement of the Russian Federation with Israel and Palestine in the years of Vladimir Putin’s presidency and the recent developments following the outbreak of violence in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023. While Russia often presents itself as a neutral and peacemaking actor, this study argues that this approach is best understood through neorealism as a strategy of power balancing and competition with the United States. Drawing on academic literature, official statements of Russian officials, and media sources, this research analyses how Russia leverages the conflict in order to expand its influence. The thesis finds that the professed neutrality of Russia is mostly a tool, which allows the state to pursue its broader effort of counterbalancing the power of the United States. |
