In 1809, Europe found itself in a state of political turmoil, as Byron wrote in one of his letters: “The Continent is in a fine state! […] an insurrection has broken out at Paris, and the Austrians are beating Buonaparte, the Tyrolese have risen”. And it is precisely at this time that Lord Byron set off to explore the parts unknown of the Continent. It was during his unconventional Grand Tour that Byron started writing Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. Two key elements set the poem apart from other narrative or travel-inspired works of its time: the places it described and the intimacy of the poetic voice. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the different manifestations and levels of intimacy presented in the four cantos of Childe Harold Pilgrimage. As observed by T.S. Eliot in his essay on the poetry of Lord Byron, the poet does not develop much “in the meaning of individual words”, rather, it was Byron’s masterful use of the narrative voice that allowed him to create an environment in which a profound connection between the poet and the reader could be established. The poem itself presents us with an intricate spectrum of intimacy: from the bawdy and erotic to the profound poetic intimacy of the narrative voice. This thesis will explore both the superficial displays of intimacy embodied in the erotic undertones and encounters of the protagonist, be it with the women of Seville or the men of the court Ali Pasha, presented in Canto I and II, and the intimacy the poem conveys on a more profound level, such as the narrator’s relationship with nature, and lost or absent friends or family members, most prominent in Cantos III and IV. |
