Research question and motivation

The main research question I intend to study is to what degree are US industry sectors dependent on rare-earth elements production in China.
REE are essential elements found in hundreds of different products used across a wide range of applications, particularly advanced consumer goods like smartphones, computer storage devices, electric and hybrid cars, or screens for monitors and TVs. They also play a significant role in defense technology, being crucial for guidance systems, lasers, radars, and sonar systems. Due to rising geopolitical tensions in recent years, these elements are becoming essential strategy material. Therefore, it is important to study how much are particular countries dependent on REE production in order to track and mitigate risks associated with trade dependency such as supply chain issues and rising costs of production.

Contribution

Most of the publicly available literature mainly examines the REE dependency of countries as a whole. My goal is to examine this issue in more detail, i.e. the dependence of individual sectors such as automotive (manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers; wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles), information technology (manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products; manufacture of electrical equipment; computer programming, consultancy and related activities; information service activities), and transportation (manufacture of other transport equipment; land transport and transport via pipelines; water transport; air transport; warehousing and support activities for transportation). Another shortcoming of the existing literature is the separate examination of given economies. Although my main focus is going to be US industries, I find comparison with different G7 countries important in order to understand this topic thoroughly with regard to the geopolitical situation and its consequences.

Methodology

My main data sources include Inter-Country Input-Output tables by OECD and BACI databases. I will further process this data by using input-output analysis (IO models), network analysis (model networks) and a new approach to value-added decompositions of trade flows. The main structure of my methodology is going to be based on Global embodied rare earths flows and the outflow paths of China's embodied rare earths paper from the Journal of Cleaner Production (i.e., to construct the embodied rare earths flow map, MRIO analysis will be adopted to obtain the embodied rare earths flow in bilateral trade). Subsequently, I will use this structure with the newly available data and the new approach to value-added decompositions of trade flows by A. Borin and M. Mancini. On top of that, I will examine new findings with a focus on cross-sectoral differences and their consequences.
