In 2015, the world was amazed by the first observation of gravitational waves emerging from the inspiral, collision, and merger of two black holes. Most such binary black holes observed in this way are in a relaxed state, inspiraling along roughly circular orbits and slowly approaching each other until their orbit loses stability and they begin to plummet towards each other. This simple relaxed state also occurs because, for most of these binary black holes, the vectors of their rotation around their own axes are perpendicular to the plane of the inspiral. However, we expect to soon see binaries where this is not the case, which will cause the orbital plane of the binary to twist and cause richer dynamics, which will be also reflected in the observed gravitational waves. The dynamics can become even more unpredictable if the spiraling also has an eccentric component for some evolutionary reason. In that case, it is an open question for gravitational-wave theorists whether we may see the inspiral in a "broken" chaotic state.
All of this can be studied using analytical and numerical methods under the umbrella of this project. If you are interested in this area of research, please contact me and we can discuss further details and suggest a specific research project for your thesis.
