Apoptosis is one of the most well-known processes of programmed cell death. It is a complex and strictly regulated process that is necessary, among other things, for normal cell renewal, aging, development and the proper functioning of the various systems in the body. Obstacles occur in cases where the regulation of apoptosis is disrupted or arrested as a result of a pathological process, such as neurodegenerative diseases or trauma. One such regulator is microRNAs (miRNAs), small noncoding RNA molecules that negatively regulate gene expression, can serve as diagnostic biomarkers, and are emerging as novel therapeutic targets for central nervous system (CNS) injury. The aim of this work is to describe the role of a specific miRNAs in the regulation of apoptosis during physiological and pathophysiological processes in the CNS.
