Plea bargaining has become an empirically relevant adjudication mechanism in the Czech criminal procedure. According to the practitioners, the convicted offender typically receives a shorter sentence than he would have received if convicted at trial. How large is this "discount"? The main objective of the thesis is to quantify the magnitude of the discount in case-level court data by using descriptive regressions as well as appropriately chosen causal method(s). The secondary objective is to interpret the findings through the lens of the economic theory of criminal procedure and optimal deterrence.
