| The aim of this paper is to explore the phenomenon of declarative questions in British English. Declarative questions, referred to as ‘queclaratives’ (Downing and Locke 2006) or ‘questions in declarative clothing’ (Siemund 2017) are a sub-type of yes-no questions which, however, display a direct word order and a final rising tone in spoken discourse, and a question mark in written texts. They are characterised as biased and conducive and have a number of functions: rather than seek information they invite the hearer’s confirmation or verification; they express the speaker’s surprise, disbelief or interest; they signal that the speaker has reached a conclusion; and they imbue the question with tentativeness (Huddleston and Pullum 2002; Quirk et al. 1985; Dušková et al. 2006; Biber et al. 2002). These functional characteristics will necessarily find reflection in formal features peculiar to the declarative question. The aim of the paper is to identify these features and explain them in functional terms. Since it can be assumed that declarative questions will appear predominantly in casual spoken language (Biber et al. 2002), the data for the analysis will be gathered from the relevant sections of the BNC (fiction/prose, spoken language/conversation) available on https://cqpweb.lancs.ac.uk/. |
