The aim of this diploma thesis is to examine how players' explicit and implicit attitudes towards content depicted in a video game influence their interaction with the game and their experience. In order to do so, this study will examine it on a particular case of a video game representing gay and bisexual women. Therefore, this study will investigate how players' experience from the game as defined by flow is influenced by their attitudes towards gay and bisexual women. At the same time, this study will provide data allowing to answer whether video games can affect players’ attitudes towards gay and bisexual women. This study will use two versions of one game differing only in the identity of one character. In one version of the developed game she will be a lesbian and in the other a heterosexual woman. The modification of the game will be part of the diploma thesis. The participants will be randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group and instructed to play the game - with the experimental group playing the version with the lesbian character and the control group playing the latter. Participants’ attitudes will be measured both before and after the play, and their flow will be measured after the play. This study brings new data to the areas of game research defining what elements affect players' experience and players' attitudes. |
