The dissertation set out to examine the proliferation of Non-State Armed Groups in the Sahel region and their Impact on State Fragility. The focus was on how the myriad of armed groups operating in the Sahel evolved within the Context of the Westphalian conception of the state which emphasizes the monopoly over the use of violence by the state. It sought to examine this phenomenon within the context of a set of theories: State theory, Ungoverned spaces, and theory of Non-state Armed Groups. A case study approach formed the overarching research strategy which focused on using incidences of armed groups brutality to illustrate the levels of violence and how that undermines the state contributing to its fragility.
