This bachelor thesis explains the formation of cultural policy of the Soviet Union, with main focus on the approach of the Soviet power to classical music and it’s prominent composers. It follows the career of the famous composer Dmitry Shostakovich, who’s often mentioned as a main victim of Stalin's campaigns against "formalism". The thesis also demonstrates the consequences of the state's cultural policies on Shostakovich's life. The paper is structured chronologically. It begins with the Bolshevik revolution in 1917, explains the formation of basic ideology concerning music in the 1920s, while analyzing the struggle of first autonomous music-organizations. It unveils the ideological and economic motivation of the government of the Soviet Union in creating political measures related to the musical culture. The paper then describes the establishment of the Union of Soviet Composers, examines attempts to create a "Soviet opera" in the mid-1930s, and looks for motives behind Stalin's attack on Shostakovich's opera Lady Macbeth in 1936. It depicts the contribution of classical music during the Second World War, for example the Leningrad symphony, and concludes with a description of the application of Zhdanov's cultural doctrine on musicians in the post-war era.
