Transoceanic disjunct distributions have long attracted the attention of biogeographers, however less attention has been paid to the evolutionary origins of ‘continent-wide’ disjunctions, in which related taxa are distributed across geographically isolated regions within the same continent. An example of this is the African continent, which in the past was covered by a continuous subtropical vegetation, however major aridification events have fragmented ranges of continuously distributed lineages and relegated them to the continental borders. Understanding these processes of aridification is a fundamental requirement to predict evolutionary responses of species to ongoing climate change.To address this we aim to identify the evolutionary patterns and processes in response to aridification in the annual desert plant, true Rose of Jericho (Anastatica hierochuntica,Brassicaceae). Its distribution, ecological requirements and genome features point it out as as a unique opportunity to understand the species ability to cope with aridification at both long and short spatiotemporal scales.The project is in its first stage. Some of the first tasks to be performed are: i) collect information about the species distribution available in databases, inventories and herbariums, ii) assess ploidy variation and genome size in the worldwide distibution of the species, iii) study the geographic distribution of the cytotypes of A. hierochuntica, iv) perform population sampling.
Looking for candidates who are passionate about the project. Candidates are expected to gain experience in different scientific aspects related to evolutionary biology, ecology and conservation as well as scientific thinking and writing. Exist the possibility to visit natural populations, as well as to make scientific stays in Israel.
