Important insights into the processes of speciation were achieved due to major developments in modern biology, i.e. during the stages of neo-Darwinian synthesis in the first half of the 20th century and adoption of molecular biology into systematic disciplines in the second half of the 20th century. Development of next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies in the beginning of 21st century has enabled to study microevolutionary phenomena within a rising field of population genomics. The aim of the thesis is to give overview of advances in studying mechanisms of diversification, hybridization and adaptation achieved especially using assays based on NGS.
