Epigenetic modifications of chromatin have pronounced impact on regulation of gene expression, and epigenetic aberrations are associated with a range of diseases and developmental defects. It turns out that chromatin states are closely linked to nutrition and metabolism. Intermediary metabolism produces substrates for enzymes modifying the histone code a thereby directly affects chromatin states. This work will review our current knowledge of the connections between intermediary metabolism and histone modifications, such as acetylation or methylation, across species and model systems.
