The DEECo component model is a novel component model for design and development of Cyber-Physical Systems. It views a system as formations of autonomous components (so called ensembles). Its basic idea is to manage the dynamism of a system by externalizing the (potentially distributed) communication among components. Specifically, a component accesses only its local data, which are communicated in the background to other components in an automated way by the DEECo runtime framework. Hence, a component is logically an autonomous unit, oblivious to the way data are exchanged, which makes it robust and adaptable with respect to dynamism. Moreover, the DEECo data exchange mechanism supports code mobility and adaptation. The DEECo model supports highly opportunistic modes of communication, including mobile ad-hoc networks. A particular challenge in ad-hoc networks is establishing robust data dissemination. Gossip-based communication stands as a promising solution to this challenge. Currently, there is a Java-based prototype implementation allowing simulation of DEECo components on desktops and servers.
The goal of this thesis is realization of DEECo runtime on the Android platform along with support for gossip-based communication via 802.15.4 standard. As Android devices typically do not support the 802.15.4 standard, the gossip-based communication is to be realized by connecting the Android platform to an embedded device board equipped with an 802.15.4 transceiver. In addition to the conceptual solution, the thesis is to provide a prototype implementation. |
