Next generation radio telescopes, such as Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) in northern Netherlands, depart from the traditional usage of large expensive dishes as antennas. Instead, they utilize a broad array of simple omnidirectional low frequency antennas. Additionally, LOFAR introduces an innovative solution, which processes the signal coming from antennas in software rather than in high cost hardware. Nevertheless, since LOFAR produces extremely large amounts of data, use of an expensive super computer is necessary.
The goal of this thesis is to explore less costly alternatives to the currently used Blue Gene/P super computer. The most promising alternative is to take advantage of the cheap computing power of graphical processing units (GPUs). Another possibility is to utilize many core CPUs. To investigate both alternatives, the thesis will employ the OpenCL framework, which is well suited for high performance applications for heterogeneous hardware. Since the performance of GPU or OpenCL application depends on parameter values specific to the used hardware, and since the inference of optimal parameter values is an intricate task with often surprising results, the thesis will introduce an extensible mechanism for brute force parameter space exploration (usually called parameter auto-tuning). |
