The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how key events and phenomena of the second half of the turbulent 20th century have gradually changed American mainstream comic books into a more critical, socially aware and self-conscious medium that became willing to deconstruct and subvert its own mythologies. The fifties will be discussed as the decade that had the most profound impact on this transformation due to the escalating Cold War and the internal social unrests that the United States faced. Relevant and exemplary publications from some of the biggest comic book publishers (DC and Marvel, among others) that reflect the pressing and often ambiguous social and political concerns of their times will be examined and/or contrasted with comic books from previous or later eras that provide a different take on similar issues. The portrayal of war, social (in)equality and racial discrimination will be among the key themes that the work will focus on, mostly (but not exclusively) in the context of superhero comics, arguably the most popular genre among graphic novels. Primary sources will include publications from such long-running series as Superman, Captain America, Iron Man or Weird Science as well as limited comic book series that are often considered to be among the best that the medium has to offer, such as Watchmen or The Dark Knight Returns. Bradford W. Wright’s Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America and The Power of Comics: History, Form and Culture by Randy Duncan and Matthew J. Smith will serve as valuable secondary sources that ensure historical and factual accuracy. |
