| The Master thesis pays attention to the preservation history of the most relevant architectural monuments of Art Nouveau in the perspective of different ideological and political systems of Hungary, the Czech Lands and France in the 20th century.
I would like to examine the influences of Art Nouveau to the society and vice versa through different heritage protection procedures and successful monument restorations, which took place in the significant “Art Nouveau” cities of Europe: Budapest, Prague, Paris, Nancy and Strasbourg. Art Nouveau movement was born in reaction to the academic schools at the end of the 19th century, and spread quickly by advertising a new architectural program, which broke with the previous dominant historical styles, and trying to meet the needs of the "modern" age, to create a better environment through the use of design and decorative elements. Thus unique and unprecedented works of the Art Nouveau were totally differing from the dominant eclectic townscapes, which was the officially accepted style in the turn of the century Europe. In Central Europe the new style had yet another aspect. It was often representing the national goals through creation of would be national style, like in Hungary or Czech Lands.[1] One of the research questions of the thesis is the history and politics related to the preservation of Art Nouveau Heritage. The reception of the style through the last century changed from approval to rejection to be again admired. For a long time, the style remained the main example of bad taste for modern and conservative critics alike, for almost half a century, no serious attempt has been made to re-evaluate it.[2]Thus with rare exceptions, until the 1960s the memories of Art Nouveau had no great value for society, in contrast to the building of historical styles. In the following period - until the end of the 1980s - the perception of Art Nouveau Heritage, has changed, and the great preservation procedures could start, which significantly contributed to consider Art Nouveau’s built heritage as collective value of the most colourful era in our history. Methodology: I think the best way is to examine the preservation of Art Nouveau’s heritage to choose relevant public buildings from each country, because they represent the public sentiment itself.[3]Thus through the analysis of their history, we are able to reconstruct the changing of the public sentiment. I selected buildings, which had the same function and the same importance as a simple public building, or protected monument, which have been already reconstructed, or are under construction. Apart from the concrete results of heritage preservation I would like to highlight the ideological change about Art Nouveau with my own periodization, which is useful in every cases of my study: • Contemporary perception of Art Nouveau and the “Prehistory” of Monument Protection (1890s-1950s) • Evolving Monument Protection ( 1960s-1980s) • New perspectives: European organizations and the World Heritage (from 1990s) As the famous french scholar Francoise Bercé said “The old architecture is only as much admired and protected as the present-day society recognize a part of their own reference point in it...”[4], so I try to reveal these above mentioned reference points in European society. I am sure that the unique architectural works of European Art Nouveau give a good opportunity to analyze how the different ideological and political systems could influence the perception of an artistic style. So I think my research would give a better understanding of the changing of mentality towards Art Nouveau through the 20th century. Overall Questions: • How long—and why—has Art Nouveau had cultural and historical value for Europeans? How have perceptions Art Nouveau evolved from the turn of the century to the present? • What role has Art Nouveau played in urban planning from the turn of the century to the present? • What were the reasons of the (re-)discovery of this unique heritage? Can we consider Art Nouveau architecture part of a common European heritage? • What were the hidden aims of the Art Nouveau in Central Europe? What were the nation-building factors of the Art Nouveau? • What helps and hinders the renovation and preservation of the Art Nouveau monuments? • How do the “new” (changed) functions help the building to be preserved? • Can we relate the typology of the Art Nouveau to an exact function of a building? What did this function mean for the people in the city? • What are the additional perspectives of the above-mentioned procedures and their further development?
