The course reflects the historical, political and social realities of different Latin American countries in the 20th century. The lectures are accompanied by presentations of the history of national cinemas and local feature films. The course consists of introductory lectures and seminars associated with projections of film extracts and discussions.

SUMMARY:

The aim of the course is to give a brief overview of the contemporary history of Latin America (approximately from the Mexican Revolution to the War of the Malvinas/Falklands) and to outline and characterize the main time periods. It is expected that students will complement the lectures with their own study of recommended literature, literary texts and/or works of national cinematographies, extracts of which will be showed and reflected at the end of each class.

Requirements: test, essay (written reflection of the course based on studied literature)

1. Introduction - theme of the course, basic literature, Latin America as a subject of Ibero-American studies. 2. Mexican Revolution. 3. Latin America and WWI. 4. Inter-American Relations. 5. Revolutions of the half of 20^th century part I (Guatemala) 6. Revolutions of the half of 20^th century part II (Bolivia). 7. Revolutions of the half of 20^th century part III (Cuba). 8. Cuban Missile Crisis. 9. Socialist Cuba in 1960s-1990s. 10. Argentina of Perón.11. Military Regimes of Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil, Dirty War in Argentina in 1976-1983. 12. War of Falklands/Malvinas in 1982.
