The discipline follows the course of Lexicology in the Bachelor's programme focusing on French word-formation, now being extended into the study of semantics and lexicography. The principles of semantics, abstract character of lexicon, relation between signifiant and signifié, semantic universalia, polysemy, changes and shifts in meaning, denotation and connotation, literal and figurative meaning, semantic relations and hierarchy of meaning. Lexical and semantic fields, functions and types of contexts crucial to understanding of the meaning of words. Introduction to lexicography and its history, types of dictionaries and the principles of their elaboration.
