JMMZ174 British Attitudes towards European Economic Integration

                    (March 5 & 6, April 9 & 10 2014)

This course seeks to explore attitudes in the United Kingdom, past and present, towards European economic integration. This will be done primarily through the lens of examining specific policies of an economic nature adopted by the EEC/EU, with final sessions devoted to current UK attitudes towards the Eurozone, the crisis of the Euro and possible exit from the EU.

The course will take the form of six lectures and five seminars, and will be assessed by means of coursework (an assessed 1500 word essay to be submitted by May 18th) and a small mark for class attendance and participation.  The course lecturer is Dr Alan Butt Philip, Honorary Jean Monnet Reader at the University of Bath, who has also been a visiting professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University since 2007.

Hugo Young,      This Blessed Plot: Britain and Europe from

                            Churchill to Blair (1999)

Stephen George’s ‘An Awkward Partner’ is a good starting point for this subject, while Hugo Young’s epic ‘This Blessed Plot’ is a magnificently researched story of the political infighting and diplomatic problems caused by ambivalence in the UK about the European integration process. My ‘Brexit Paper’ is a prospectus of issues that the UK might have to deal with if it left the EU altogether after 2017. This was written for

a competition organised last year by the Institute of Economic Affairs, London and shortlisted for further development.
