Kurz si klade za cíl seznámit studenty s vývojem kultury ve střední Evropě ve druhé polovině 20. století. Tematicky se kurz věnuje široce chápanému pojmu kultury jako společenského prostoru, alternativního k politice. V oblasti umění je pozornost věnována literatuře, v menší míře filmu, fotografii či architektuře. Na příkladu kulturního prostředí lze zkoumat zásadní proměny středoevropské společnosti od zážitku, recepce a reflexe druhé světové války, přes „únos” střední Evropy do sféry vlivu Sovětského svazu, až po události let 1989/1990. Kurz seznamuje studenty s problematikou nepopisným způsobem na vybraných klíčových tématech kultury a umění.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the cultural developments in Central Europe in the 2nd half of the 20th century. Topics from the seminar cover widely understood the definition of culture as a social landscape, alternative to politics. From artistic point of view, the course aims at literature, to a smaller extent film, photography or architecture. On the example of cultural environment, students can investigate fundamental changes of the Central European society from the experience, reception, and reflexion of the WWII, through the "kidnapping" of Central Europe to the Soviet Union's sphere of influence to the events from 1989/1990. The course presents the topics in a non-descriptive manner on selected key topics from culture and arts.

The aim of the seminar is to teach students the basic knowledge about the development of culture in Central Europe in the second half of the 20th century. The course understands culture as a widely defined social space, alternative to politics. Art styles covered by the course are literature but to some extent also film, photography or architecture.

Pravidelná a aktivní účast na semináři, která zahrnuje průběžné zvládnutí předepsané přípravné četby ke každému probíranému tématu v celkovém rozsahu cca. 180 tiskových stran a na tomto základě aktivní účast na diskuzi o tomto tématu, dále příprava referátu (20 minut) na vybrané téma s využitím studijní literatury v rozsahu cca. 30 tiskových stran a složení ústní zkoušky na základě menší seminární práce na vybrané téma v rozsahu do 10 stran textu.

Regular and active participation of students in the seminar, which encompasses regular reading of the mandatory texts to the covered topics (approx. 180 pages) and active discussion based on this reader. Oral presentation (20 minutes) on a selected topic based on approx. 30 pages of texts. An oral examination based on the defense of small seminar paper (10 pages max.).

Znalost anglického jazyka a soudobých dějin minimálně na středoškolské úrovni. Tento kurz je povinný pro studenty oboru Central European Comparative Studies (CECS), studenti ostatních oborů budou přijati pouze po schválení vyučujícím.
