Although education and theories in marketing communication (MARCOM) are often considered as worthless, and even though MARCOM students are commonly being told that only practice and real world experience matter, these opinions are not only outdated, but especially incorrect. By taking this unit, the students will be provided with a competitive advantage as they uncover the value and meaning of studying MARCOM, as well as the ways of successfully combining MARCOM education, theories and practice. This will be done, one one hand, through facilitating a learner-centred approach, encouraging students to reflect on their own being and becoming. On the other hand, the students will also learn about MARCOM in its historical, theoretical, educational and practical contexts, whilst gaining an understanding about their own potential role as active players at all of these spheres separately as well as simultaneously.

Dr Marketa Zezulkova is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism and an Insights Specialists at the advertising agency Zaraguza. She received a PhD from Bournemouth University (UK) (2015) and she has studied or worked as a scholar at a number of European, US, Asian and Latin American universities, an experience upon which she will draw in the Blending MARCOM Education, Theory & Practice unit.

The students will submit a team video essay: This will simulate an instructional video for other MKPR students who did not take this unit. The video will introduce MARCOM as a field of study, explain reasons for studying MARCOM, and provide advices on how to make the most of the studies whilst keeping the future in mind. This will include an investigative exercise as the students will be required to interview a small number of MARCOM scholars, graduates, student alumni and/or practitioners.
